Ezeiza Airport Launches $100M Expansion to Boost Airside Capacity

Aeropuertos Argentina has announced a major investment program exceeding $100 million for Buenos Aires' Ezeiza International Airport (EZE), officially known as Ministro Pistarini International Airport. The project focuses on enhancing airside capacity, operational efficiency, and cargo capabilities to accommodate growing traffic. This investment follows a year where EZE handled 12 million passengers in 2025, a 5.10% increase over the previous year.

The expansion is a strategic move to solidify EZE's position as a primary gateway to Argentina and a key hub in South America. The works, coordinated with Argentina's National Airport System Regulatory Body, or Organismo Regulador del Sistema Nacional de Aeropuertos (ORSNA), address critical infrastructure needs driven by rising passenger and freight demand in the region.

Project Scope and Airside Enhancements

The core of the investment is directed at airside infrastructure. A new apron, designated "Golf," will be constructed to provide parking stands for seven narrow-body aircraft. This addition is designed to streamline aircraft movements and reduce ground delays.

Furthermore, the project includes the comprehensive rehabilitation of the secondary runway, 17-35, and its intersection with the main runway, 11-29. This maintenance is crucial for ensuring operational safety and availability. Sebastián Villar Guarino, General Manager of Ezeiza, confirmed that the operator, Aeropuertos Argentina, is coordinating closely with airlines to manage operations during the construction period. The work will necessitate a temporary reduction in the main runway's operational length, requiring careful scheduling to minimize disruptions.

Terminal Modernization and Passenger Experience

Beyond the airfield, the project includes significant upgrades to terminal facilities. The domestic arrivals area will be expanded by 1,200 square meters to improve passenger flow and comfort. Technologically, the airport will undergo a substantial modernization with the replacement of over 1,700 terminal operating system devices. This includes the installation of new self-check-in kiosks and other systems prepared for future biometric integration, aligning with the growing trend of smart airport technologies in Latin America.

The operator, formerly known as Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 (AA2000), aims to enhance the overall passenger journey from check-in to boarding. These upgrades are vital as 31 airlines currently operate at Ezeiza, connecting the Argentine capital to 55 international and 35 domestic destinations.

Sustainability Initiatives

A key component of the expansion is a focus on sustainability. A new renewable energy supply system will be installed to power five aircraft stands, reducing the airport's reliance on fossil fuels and lowering its carbon footprint. This initiative supports aircraft while they are parked at the gate, a phase of operation that traditionally depends on auxiliary power units.

In addition, a new reverse osmosis water treatment plant will be constructed. This facility is designed to process 100% of the water used at the airport, enabling significant water recycling and conservation efforts. These environmental upgrades position EZE as a leader in sustainable airport operations within the region.
