Air India Express has officially inaugurated a direct flight service from Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR) to Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi. Flagged off by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday, the service marks the resumption of international air travel from Indore after a four-and-a-half-month suspension. The new route replaces the previously suspended Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) service, which had faced persistent operational challenges. This development significantly improves regional connectivity, as Air India Express's flight schedule now operates four days a week, offering a streamlined link between central India and the Middle East.

The Role of Viability Gap Funding

To ensure the long-term financial viability of this international operation, the government of Madhya Pradesh has introduced a strategic subsidy mechanism. Under the Madhya Pradesh Civil Aviation Policy 2025, Chief Minister Yadav announced that the state will provide Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of Rs 15 lakh per international flight. This financial intervention has directly benefited passengers, with ticket prices dropping to a range of Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000, compared to the previous unsubsidized cost of Rs 24,000 to Rs 25,000. This model mirrors the successful federal UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which has historically utilized VGF to expand regional air networks across India.

Route Efficiency and Passenger Impact

For travelers, the shift to Zayed International Airport provides significant strategic advantages. While passengers bound for Dubai now face an approximate 140-kilometer overland transit from Abu Dhabi, the airport serves as a major global transit hub with connectivity to over 80 cities across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. This allows students, business professionals, and tourists from the Malwa-Nimar region to bypass the congestion often found at major domestic hubs like Delhi and Mumbai.

Strategic Network Shifts

The aviation industry is currently observing a trend where regional governments are increasingly adopting VGF models to attract international carriers to tier-2 cities. By migrating routes from secondary airports to major global hubs, airlines can offer passengers wider network connectivity while mitigating operational bottlenecks. This follows the temporary suspension of West Asia routes earlier in 2026 due to regional geopolitical tensions, which had disrupted international operations from Indore for several months.

Following the successful launch of the Abu Dhabi route, the government of Madhya Pradesh is expected to pursue the approval and launch of additional international and domestic routes under the Civil Aviation Policy 2025 throughout late 2026 and 2027.
