NMIA Opens to Global Aviation

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has officially commenced international operations, marking a significant milestone in the development of India's aviation infrastructure. The inaugural international service, operated by Air India Express, departed for Abu Dhabi on July 15, 2026. This launch occurs roughly seven months after the airport first opened for domestic commercial services on December 25, 2025. The transition follows the receipt of an Aerodrome License for International Operations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Addressing Mumbai's Capacity Constraints

The development of NMIA serves as a vital solution to the severe capacity constraints at Mumbai's primary hub, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). In 2025, CSMIA handled a record 55.5 million passengers, operating at or near peak capacity. By establishing a dual-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, NMIA aims to redistribute traffic and alleviate the slot constraints that have historically limited growth at CSMIA. This strategy mirrors the successful model implemented in Goa with the opening of Manohar International Airport in January 2023.

Cargo and Infrastructure Capacity

Beyond passenger services, the inaugural international departure also carried NMIA's first shipment of perishable export cargo. This highlights the airport's role as a new node in India's logistics network. According to project specifications, NMIA's Phase 1 development is designed to support an initial capacity of 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. The project is managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) in a joint venture with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).

Strategic Growth and Future Outlook

For Air India Express, the launch represents a critical execution of its dual-airport strategy in Mumbai. Nipun Aggarwal, Chairman of Air India Express, noted that the route is designed to complement the airline's existing network at CSMIA. Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, emphasized that this milestone initiates a new growth phase for the facility, positioning it as a preferred gateway for the region. The airport's development is expected to continue, with Phase 2 construction slated to scale capacity toward an ultimate goal of 90 million annual passengers by the early 2030s.
