Dholera International Airport, a critical infrastructure project located near Ahmedabad, is nearing completion as construction reaches the 80 per cent milestone. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed during a project review that the facility is on track for an anticipated operational launch by October 2026. This development marks a significant step in the regional aviation strategy, positioning the site as a cornerstone of India's developing industrial and semiconductor landscape.

Infrastructure and Operational Readiness

The project’s core aviation assets have already reached full completion, ensuring the site is prepared for regulatory assessment. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, the primary runway, and the associated taxiway are 100 per cent finished. The state-of-the-art passenger terminal, which spans 25,000 square metres, is currently 75 per cent complete. Once fully operational, the terminal is designed to handle an annual capacity of 2 million passengers. Additionally, a 2,500-square-metre cargo terminal is under construction to facilitate logistics for the surrounding industrial ecosystem.

Multi-Modal Integration and Economic Impact

Dholera is being developed as an "aerotropolis," intentionally integrated with regional transport and manufacturing hubs. The Central Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 20,667 crore for a semi high-speed rail corridor that will connect Ahmedabad directly to the airport terminal. This multi-modal design ensures that passengers can transition seamlessly from rail to air, a feature intended to attract global investment in futuristic technologies such as green energy and semiconductor manufacturing.

The airport will also host specialized Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hangars. These facilities are designed to support the Tata Group’s semiconductor operations and provide maintenance services for the Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft. This strategic focus on MRO capabilities aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen domestic defence and civil aerospace maintenance capacity.

Aerospace Manufacturing and Future Growth

A key development for the site is the finalization of an agreement between Embraer and Adani Aviation Systems. The partnership will establish a Final Assembly Line (FAL) to produce India’s first civilian "Make in India" aircraft. This facility is expected to roll out its first domestically assembled aircraft by 2028, further cementing Dholera's status as a hub for aerospace investment.

Regulatory and Construction Timeline

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently coordinating with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to secure the necessary aerodrome operational licenses. Minister Naidu has directed contractors to finalize all on-site construction by September 2026. This aggressive timeline is intended to ensure that all regulatory requirements are satisfied, allowing for the commencement of commercial flight operations by the targeted October 2026 window.
