The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has officially granted an aerodrome licence to the new Bhogapuram International Airport, marking a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development. The project, managed by the GMR Group, reached completion six months ahead of its original December 2026 deadline. Following a month-long safety and operational assessment, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) cleared the facility to commence commercial flight operations. This greenfield development is designed to serve as a primary aviation hub for India’s eastern coast, with an initial handling capacity of 6 million passengers annually.

Strategic Shift from Visakhapatnam

The transition to Bhogapuram mirrors the strategic framework seen in Goa, where the Manohar International Airport (Mopa) replaced civilian operations at the military-controlled Dabolim Airport. By moving commercial traffic to the new facility, the Indian Navy will gain exclusive jurisdiction over the existing Visakhapatnam Airport (INS Dega). While the move increases capacity, it introduces logistical changes for local travelers; passengers must now transit approximately 40-45 km from the Visakhapatnam city center to reach the new terminal. Despite these concerns from regional business groups regarding ground travel time, the master plan allows for phased expansion to eventually serve up to 40 million passengers annually, supported by a dedicated cargo terminal with a capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes.

Expansion of Domestic Connectivity

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu has outlined a broader vision for the sector, emphasizing the government's target of fostering at least five major domestic carriers with fleets exceeding 100 aircraft. This growth strategy is complemented by the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme, which now includes the integration of water aerodromes. Following successful DGCA-monitored trials of a DHC6-400 Twin Otter between Kochi and Lakshadweep, the government is preparing for a commercial rollout of seaplane services in late 2026. This initiative aims to reduce travel friction to remote islands like Agatti and Kavaratti, potentially driving a surge in high-value tourism.

India’s previous attempts at seaplane connectivity, such as the Sabarmati-Kevadia service launched in October 2020, faced significant operational challenges that led to its suspension in 2021. The current India seaplane service rollout incorporates stricter safety oversight and performance monitoring to avoid similar outcomes.
