Air Canada has officially announced the launch of its first-ever direct service between Canada and Tenerife, marking a significant expansion of the airline's winter leisure network. The carrier will operate four weekly flights connecting Tenerife South Airport (TFS) with Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) beginning in late October 2026. This development represents the only non-stop air connection between North America and the Canary Islands.

These new routes are enabled by the deployment of the Airbus A321 Extra Long Range (A321XLR), a next-generation narrowbody aircraft. The introduction of this model allows Air Canada to serve "thin" transatlantic markets that were previously economically unviable for larger widebody jets. The aircraft is configured with 182 seats, consisting of 14 Business Class seats and 168 Economy seats, featuring the airline's latest long-haul cabin design.

According to data provided by the Cabildo de Tenerife, the island welcomed 51,174 passengers from Canada and the United States in 2025, more than double the figures recorded in 2019. This upward trajectory continued into 2026, with Tenerife’s airports handling 22,168 North American passengers between January and May, including 17,430 from the U.S. and 4,738 from Canada.

By strengthening its presence in North America, Tenerife aims to reduce its historical reliance on European source markets and attract a higher-spending visitor base. In May 2025, United Airlines concluded its non-stop service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Tenerife South, leaving the market without direct North American connectivity. The A321XLR provides superior range and efficiency compared to older narrowbody platforms, allowing for a more sustainable cost structure on these long-distance, lower-density routes.
