Afcom Holdings Targets Widebody Expansion

Afcom Holdings has executed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with The Boeing Company for the acquisition of up to four Boeing 777-8F freighter aircraft. This strategic move marks a significant shift for the Chennai-based cargo airline, signaling its intent to transition from narrowbody operations to long-haul, high-capacity widebody freight. The proposed acquisition is designed to support the Indian air cargo expansion by providing native capacity for routes connecting India to the Far East and Africa.

Financial Foundation for Growth

The airline’s move follows a successful capital raise, having secured ₹199.85 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) on May 5, 2026. This financial injection is earmarked for fleet expansion and operational scaling. Afcom Holdings reported a strong performance in its latest financial disclosures, with Q1 FY2027 standalone revenue reaching ₹176.1 crore, a 48.12% increase year-over-year. This growth trajectory provides the fiscal runway necessary to support the transition to the Boeing widebody freighter order.

Fleet Strategy and Capability Shift

Currently, Afcom Holdings operates a fleet of three Boeing 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters (BCF), which have an average age of 25.7 years. The airline has stated plans to expand this narrowbody fleet to five aircraft by late 2026. However, the introduction of the 777-8F represents a fundamental change in capability. According to Boeing Commercial Airplanes specifications, the 777-8F offers approximately five times the cargo capacity of the existing 737-800BCF fleet, enabling the airline to serve longer, more lucrative international sectors.

The current LOI serves as a preliminary, non-binding agreement. The transition to a firm order remains contingent upon the finalization of a definitive purchase agreement, expected between late 2026 and 2027. Furthermore, Afcom Holdings will need to secure approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India to add widebody aircraft types to its existing Air Operator Permit (AOP). This regulatory step is a prerequisite for launching the intended long-haul international cargo sectors.
