AerCap is the world's largest owner of Boeing 787 aircraft and has the largest 787 order book of any lessor, with approximately 140 aircraft owned and on order. Boeing's official order data confirms that the lessor added 15 additional 787-9s to its portfolio in July 2026 to meet persistent demand for fuel-efficient widebodies. This scale provides the lessor with significant leverage in the global aviation leasing market.

While the 787-9 offers improved operating economics, environmental advocates have raised concerns regarding the sector's growth. According to environmental groups, absolute growth in long-haul widebody fleets often outpaces the per-seat efficiency gains provided by new technology, which may contribute to higher total carbon emissions despite the technical improvements in engine performance.
